Glastonbury Abbey was established in 712 under the Benedictine order. The Glastonbury area has been associated with the legend of King Arthur, a connection promoted by medieval monks who asserted that Glastonbury was Avalon. There is a burial site on the grounds for Arthur and his wife Guinevere. The remains were removed and hidden during the dissolution of the Montasteries under King Henry the VIII. Christian legends have claimed that the abbey was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the 1st century.
