Description
This medieval castle is located just north of the village of Raglan in the county of Monmouthshire in south east Wales. Raglan Castle is one of the last true castles to be built in Wales. Its construction began in the 1430s by Sir William ap Thomas, the Blue Knight of Gwent who fought at the Battle of Agincourt with King Henry V in 1415. He was responsible for building the Great Tower at Raglan, which became known as the Yellow Tower of Gwent as it was constructed from yellow sandstone from the nearby River Wye.
The Great Tower or Yellow Tower of Gwent, is surrounded by a moat, which is crossable by bridge from the main castle. The tower has an apron wall with six turrets just above water level. In one of the these turrets, is this stairway leading into the moat. I can only imagine why…
